World History

Homework Assignment 12

1.	World War II began in the year 1931 when Japan started its invasion at Manchuria, China. Japan wanted to expand its economy and power, and they thought the best way to do that was to conquer and expand their lands. World War II was mostly fought on European soil. There were two sides: the allies and the axis. The Allies side consisted of the United States (which did not join the war till the attack on Pearl Harbor), Great Britain, and the U.S.S.R. The Axis powers consisted of Germany, Japan, and Italy.

2.	Fascism is the political philosophy that elevates the nation and its ethnicity above the individual, and uses a dictator to impose economic and social regimentation and control. Communism is a socioeconomic structure and political ideology that promotes the establishment of egalitarian, classless, stateless society based on common ownership and control of the means of production and property in general. Both fascism and communism are similar in the sense the both have one central power, usually a dictator, and everyone had to do as they were told. They both are opposite in the sense in fascism your country comes first and not everyone is equal. In communism everyone is equal and on the same level, communists hated wealth.

3.	I believe Hitler and his supports killed many people because Hitler could did not want enemies. Anyone who defied him and his system should die. He was trying to change Germany almost into another Sparta.

4.	When communism spread to nationalism China, the Chinese nationalists were fighting World War II. A Civil war started in China that was between the Communists and the nationalists. Under the communistic rule, property was seized and distributed to the peasants. Peasants were forced to work on collectives farms, and women were treated like. Soon people began to work less and less because there was no private property as an incentive. Because of that a famine resulted which killed about 30 million Chinese people.

5.	The Cold War began almost as soon as World War II ended. It started because of the Atomic Bomb. The U.S.S.R. had a scheduled date to start an invasion on Japan on approximately August 6, 1945. The United States asked the U.S.S.R. to postpone that date till August 15, 1945, and the U.S.S.R. agreed. Little did the U.S.S.R. know that the United States had developed an atomic weapon and as soon as the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, the U.S.S.R. realized they had been deceived. Three days later on August 9, 1945, the U.S.S.R. started their invasion on Japan, but it was too late, Japan had already surrendered to the United States. Fearing for their lives, the U.S.S.R. started to build up a nuclear arsenal. The United States also built up their nuclear arsenal. None of the nuclear weapons that were produced were used on each other. Each side knew what a nuclear weapon could do to humanity because of the two atomic bombs that had been dropped on Japan. Another reason neither side launched their nuclear missiles against each other was because of a theory called Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). This theory stated that if the U.S.S.R., or the United States, launched their missiles at the other side, the other side would realize they were going to die and so they would launch all of their missiles. All of the missiles would and approximately the same time killing just about everyone on each side.

6.	Technological advances helped the allied forces because it gave they better weapons and armor then the enemy. The Allies also developed radar which allowed them to know the positions of enemy ships, tanks, and planes.

7.	The United States did the right thing entering World War II. First, it was in a depression, known as the Great Depression, and a war provided a great way out of it. Second, the Japanese, who was part of the Axis alliance, attacked us first. The United States did what anyone else would have done, attack back.

On the other side were Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States.
6.	A European colony in the 20th century was New Zealand. Great Britain had New Zealand involved in a operation during World War I. The operation turned out to be a failure, and New Zealand lost a lot of men. After that failure, New Zealand wanted to leave the control of Britain.

7.	The economic problems today are similar in ways and different in other ways to the Great Depression. Today some people are still spending money. In the Great Depression Almost nobody would spend money unless they had to. Government was not becoming bigger during the Great Depression like it is today.

The Roman Empire conquered other lands and ruled them, while the United States does not conquer other lands, unless attacked, but tries to defend a good number of them.
7.	Up to this point in world history, God had been paving the way for the birth of Christ. The Greeks established a common language throughout the world. The Romans build great roads to make traveling easier.

6.	Plato impressed me the most. He thought things could be learned just through logic. His thinking said that someone could train them self to do something without actually doing it.

7.	The Assyrians were very brutal. They would torture the people that they captured in battle. Their history was short lived. They were the ones who conquered Israel.(Babylon conquered Judea)

1.	I hope to learn more about the history of the wonderful world that God created.

2.	I like the table that shows the reign of each empire. I enjoy learning about he conquering of the countries and the strategy involved.

3.	Hammurabi’s Code instilled discipline. If you broke a law there was no getting around it. You would be punished. I like the fact that if someone accused someone else wrongfully, then he or she was punished instead.

4.	The major empires from the lecture are Mesopotamia, Assyrian’s, Babylon, Chaldean’s, Persians, Egypt, Greeks, and Romans.

5.	The controversy between the Israelites and the Arab’s can be traced back to this weeks lecture. Fighting still exists between the two countries.

6.	The three kingdoms of ancient Egypt are the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. The Old Kingdom was secure and prosperous. The Middle Kingdom was a very religious period. The New Kingdom was a time of great influence.

American History

Homework Assignment 13

1.	My favorite time in American history is World War II. I love the strategy in all battles. It was a war in which America really developed militarily.

2.	Ronald Reagan was a conservative, was for low spending, and did what was right for the country. Bill Clinton was a Democrat, liar, and did what he wanted to do or what the people thought they needed.

3.	I think the most important trend that is guiding America is its economy. It keeps going way up and way down.

4.	The most important threat to America today is Islam. When Solomon started marrying foreign wives, they changed his faith. This started the fall of Israel.

5.	When the culture in a country is high, then the success of that country is high. When America had a great economy, then the success of the country went well. But when the depression hit, the success of America decreased.

6.	Two of the greatest achievements of Ronal Reagan were the Star Wars program, which designed missiles that could shoot down other, bigger missiles, and passing the biggest tax bill in American history.

7.	I think this map was drawn during the 16th or 17th century. I do not think America has met the expectations of this map maker.
8.	H2	Why do black American’s vote for liberal candidates?
Most of the black American population votes for liberal candidates because they are usually on the poorer side in America. Liberal candidates are more communistic and establish more programs to help the poor out. Unfortunately, the poorer people in America take way to much advantage of the government programs that are set up to help them.

9.	H4.	I am against the US government spying on its own citizens. If the government is using this spy technology to find a criminal or someone who would be considered “hot”, then I am okay with the program. But when the government starts listening in on every phone conversation to see if any of us might be a potential terrorists or something, than I believe that is wrong.

10.	H1.	I predict that within the first two years of the Obama administration, the United States economy will collapse and we will be headed into a full scale war.

American History Assignment 12

1.	The main protagonists in the Cold War was the Soviet Union.

2.	The two wars that caused over 50,000 American Deaths were the Korean War and the Vietnam War. I do not agree with out acceptance of the outcomes. The Korean War could have been won if it were not for the president.

3.	The aspect that impressed me most was the admission of James Meredith to the University of Mississippi. This was the time in American where people of a different race began to become accepted as “people”.

4.	One thing that President Johnson is known best for is getting the US involved in the Vietnam War. He is famous for screwing up the war. The Vietnam War was a huge mistake.

5.	I like the fact that the 80th Congress was able to give us an economic boom. It shows that Republicans make better decisions than democrats. We will find out next year (2009) if Democrats are capable of the same. They probably won’t be.

6.	I thought the most important man was Earl Warren. He knew how to gain respect and how to lead.

H1.	Muhammad Ali was entitled to a conscientious objection based on Islam. America was based on freedom of religion. No matter what the religion is, the government still has to respect it.

H3.	The ERA was not a good time for Christians. Something was happening in the country that wanted everyone to be equal. God created man and women to have their differences. Man should not stand between God.

H5.	I loved MacArthur’s strike plan. He had the mind of a genius. Unfortunately all of the United States best general live at a time when the government is not on their side (George Washington, George Patton …).

Homework Assignment 11

1.	History can teach people mistakes made in the past and can allow one to decide how not to make the same mistake.

2.	I believe that the United States was right to enter World War II. It would have been good for us to have entered the war sooner. Britain might not have been bombed and the bombing at Pearl Harbor might not have happened.

3.	I like the when America allowed the Irish into America when they had the potato famine. I probably wouldn’t be here if it were not for that (I’m part Irish).

4.	I like that the economy was and business was good best during the Roaring Twenties.

5.	I am not a big fan about the new deal. I am not one for the government taking over more things. Too much government power is not good. I would not have set up so many government run programs to satisfy the public. If those things needed to be satisfied, someone would have thought about it.

6.	I believe we were right to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. Japan asked for a war, and that’s what they got. If we did not drop the atomic bomb, then many American soldiers would have died.

7.	The cartoon shows FDR watching as Truman tries to take over the entire country. It shows that whatever FDR did was small in comparison to Truman.

8.	H1.	Throughout the presidential election (especially the democratic candidates) are followers of the people. Whatever the people want in a president that is what the democratic candidate says he will do. When he becomes president, he not really a leader or a follower. He does whatever he pleases to do. The presidency has become bigger than it should.

9.	H2.	FDR should have only let the Japanese bomb one or two ships. If he really knew about the bombing, he should have had a secret attack force to attack the Japanese so America would not have lost all of the men and ships.

10.	I believe that it is a waste of time to try to create United Nations. No one will ever get every country to join it. Without having 80% of all the countries the world cannot be controlled.

American History

Homework Assignment 10

1.	For better preparation for the midterm exam, I could have read through the model answers more, and have gone over the lectures. The part of American History that I could improve most on for next time is all of the written documents.

2.	My favorite question on the midterm, that I missed, is #4: A student was overheard saying the following: “The Puritans, like the Quakers, believed in religious freedom for all.” What should the teacher say to the student? I like the question because the answer is just one that seems like an odd answer.

3.	I like how the two lawyers cross-examined each other.

4.	I think the United States did the right thing in entering World War I. We had been attacked. We had to teach the German’s a good lesson.

5.	Teddy Roosevelt had a great foreign policy, “speak softly and carry a big stick.” I do not support his action to breaking up the big monopolies. Instead of breaking them up, he should have given money to new businesses so they could compete.

6.	The 16th amendment:
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census of enumeration.
Congress was wrong to make this amendment. It just gives the government more power.

7.	In the cartoon Franklin Roosevelt is grabbing Russia and Japan by the ears. Roosevelt invited Japan and Russia to a meeting to end the war between them. They created the Treaty of Portsmouth.

8.	H2	If the limitations of free speech during a war are absolutely necessary for the well fare of a country, than I could agree with what the government did during World War I. If the government just did it because they did not want to here the peoples complaints, then I am totally against it. I am totally against what the government did during World War I. They basically did not want to here the complaints.

9.	H3	Government should not be able to interfere with free enterprise by establishing maximum working hours for men. If a man wants to work every hour of his life, then he should have the right to do that. As long as the business that the man is working for allows him to work that long, than there should be nothing wrong with it. The government has no right to interfere.

10.	H4	Some of the questions of the midterm exam were challenging. Others needed careful reading. The “which article did this quote come from” questions were not easy at all. I was disappointed because the midterm did not cover any of the wars. About 5 wars were fought, and nothing was on the test about them. I learned that I need to prepare myself better for the final exam. I do not know every answer just from reading the lectures once.

1.	The 2008 presidential election is most similar to the election of

2.	Imperialism is a bad. It is like the bigger chasing the little kid. That’s called bullying.

3.	Progressive movement appears to make government bigger.

4.	The cartoon shows President McKinley holding a Philippine boy at the edge of a cliff. McKinley had to decide what to do with the Philippine’s. He could give it to Spain or keep it as an American Territory.

5.	H1.	I disagree with how the United States ended the Spanish-American War in the Philippine’s. American should not have had to buy the Philippine’s. They were already owned by someone.

6.	I do not think that newspapers played a huge role in the 2008 presidential election as compared to the election in 1890. The internet and the television are the big thing now. Newspapers are not as popular.

7.	The Cartoon is showing Columbia protecting the Chinese immigrants from the anti-Chinese-immigrant crowd. Should the Chinese stay or go.

8.	H1.	I prefer inflation to deflation. In deflation is the rising of prices, but he economy is not crashing. When deflation happens, the economy crashes. Inflation is encouraged more by a “hard money” standard because the value of the dollar decreases.

9.	Mystery: Did George McClellan scorn Abraham Lincoln because he was homeschooled?
George McClellan probably would not scorn Abraham Lincoln because he was homeschooled. Homeschooling was pretty common back then. He probably scorned Lincoln because Lincoln did not have as great an education as he had. McClellan graduated West Point in the top five of his class. He probably thought he was a better man and knew more than Lincoln ever could.

10.	H3.	Abraham Lincoln was a great man. He was very intelligent. When he became president, he knew what had to be done in order to preserve the Union, and he took the right actions. Not every president would have declared war on its own country.

1.	The Revolution of 1800 was a peaceful change in power due to an election in modern history.

2.	If I were president I would have approved the Louisiana Purchase because I believe the U.S. needed the expansion. Having more land was a show of power to other countries.

3.	A cause of the War of 1812 was electing the egghead James Madison, to the presidency.

4.	I like the prosperity that occurred in under the Monroe Administration.

5.	Jacksonian Democracy means that Andrew Jackson won the presidency by a huge margin.

6.	The Marshall Court is known for its expansion in government and for the case Marbury vs. Madison.

7.

8.	H1	Jefferson seems to receive better treatment by historians than he deserves because he was president during the Louisiana Purchase. He doubled the size of the United States.

9.	H4	The North loved the tariffs, while the South hated the tariffs. The North loved the tariffs because it reduced the competition with other foreign countries. The South hated the tariffs because they produced all the cotton and needed things that could only be imported.

10.	H5	Slavery affected the right to freedom of speech. Some people were opposed to slavery while others were not. The even split between the two sides caused a lot of tension. If someone were to speak out against slavery, they would be put down and some were even killed. When the government tries to solve these kinds of problems they usually make laws forbidding that speech. Today gays are affecting out freedom to speech by placing the hate speech law on us.

American History
Homework Assignment 3

1.	Two weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation are the National government could not enforce any of the law that it made, and the government could not place taxes.

2.	The first three Articles of the Constitution are Articles I: the Legislatives Branch. Article II: Executive Branch. Article III: the Judicial Branch. Congress is established in article I. the president is established in article II.

3.	I like George Washington’s great leadership abilities the most.

4.	The most important invention of the 1790’s was the cotton gin. It allowed to South to produce 50 times the amount of cotton. It gave the south the name, “King Cotton”.

5.	The cartoonist was most likely a Federalist. Only five colonies are represented standing up in the cartoon. Massachusetts appears to be falling over. Massachusetts went along with the constitution, but then decided to break away from it.

6.	Two significant achievements of The Northwest Ordinance were it established a three-stage process based on population for the new states to be created and join the Confederation, and it was the first to protect territories against the taking of property by government without just compensation.

7.	John Adam’s presidency was a complete failure. It just kept becoming worse. The thing that stands out the most though is that he made a law that it was a crime to criticize him. He made a law against the constitution that had just been written.

8.	H2.	I believe that the Anti-Federalists had some good points. They did not want to establish a new government after they had just gotten rid of the old one.

9.	H4.	In Shays’ Rebellion, Shay and his gang kept on attacking and capture until they were forced to run from the overpowering militia. In the Whiskey Rebellion, started attacking everything. George Washington told the governor to put the rebellion down, but was too afraid to do so. George Washington then brought an army down, and before a shot was fired all the rebels fled. I believe it is necessary to have a good, strong president.

10.	H5.	Jefferson and Madison responded to the Alien and Sedition Acts by drafting strong state resolutions, to “nullify” them as unconstitutional. I would agree with them in their approach because the Alien and Sedition Acts were unconstitutional.

Homework Assignment 1

1.	Spanish, English, and French
2.	I find his search for adventure most inspiring.
3.	Several early settlements in America failed because they the people in those settlements were not used to America’s weather, the land, and the Indians.
4.	The motivation for the first settlements in Massachusetts’s area was religious freedom. The Pilgrims wanted to separate from the Church of England completely. The Puritans just wanted to purify the Church of England without leaving it.
5.	William Penn was remarkable, because he was the first person to start a colony that offered freedom to all religions.
6.	The four types of colonies were Joint-stock colony’s (Virginia and Massachusetts Bay), charter colony’s (Connecticut and Rhode Island), proprietary colony’s (Pennsylvania and New York), and royal colony’s (Georgia).
7.	The Puritans were not right to be strict and to expel people of other religions. Everyone is welcomed to his or her own religion. However, the Puritans did have the right to be strict and to expel people of other religions.
8.	H1.	A colony based on a particular religion or religious ideal might encounter areas where they are not welcomed. It is possible that they could survive without the help of other settlements, just like the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims were on their own for the first winter when they arrived in Massachusetts. The King of England was not willing to help them out because he hated them for their religious views.
9.	H2. The Massachusetts Bay Company obtained a royal charter and sent a group of Puritans to settle in New England. They hoped to purify the Church of England with a more perfect community than in England itself. It was financed and led by John Winthrop.
10.	H3.	What happened to the Roanoke Colony?
The settlers in the Roanoke Colony had been dropped off with the promise that England would return with more people in one year. A lot of things can happen in one year. Not being used to the country and the ways of survival in America, the colonists probably ran low on supplies. Indian attacks would have instilled fear into the colonists, so that they would not attempt to go and collect food. Growing weaker and weaker, the colonists then either surrendered to the Indians or were killed by them.

On April 30th, 1915, the Lusitania was being loaded in New York with supplies, and was secretly being loaded with ammunition. Over on the other side of the world, in Germany, on the same day, Kapitänleutnant Walter Schwieger was ordered to take his U-boat-20 German submarine to take patrol of part of the Atlantic. The Lusitania started its trip across the Atlantic to Great Britain on May 1st, 1915, carrying 1257 passengers and 702 crew members under the command of Captain William Turner. Running low on fuel Kapitänleutnant Walter Schwieger decided to turn back. On his way back he ran into several ships, and sunk them.
