Schmit: Spelling

Unless you go into a full discussion of France's politics, which could very well happen in the future, I suppose, the statement about France not supporting the invasion of Iraq seems to be a bit irrelevant. Are we going to list every single country's stance on the Iraq war?

France is a country in Western Europe, about 3,500 miles from the [[United States]]. At its height it rivaled the British Empire with colonies in every corner of the world. It continued to be a strong presence in academia and has been the birthplace of countless renowned scholars. It remains a powerhouse in the [[European Union]], and is consistently at odds with the [[United Kingdom]] on issues of EU policy. The capital city is Paris, often called the "City of Lights" due to its renown for a center of learning and philosophy.

It was a founding member of the European Coal and Steel treaty which led to the EEC and EU. Its contributions to western culture have been immense if controversial. It has made a number of philosophical contributions to the world, including Descartes and Sartre, existentialism and postmodernism. Its own colonial behavior and the treatment of non-French soldiers has been criticized of late. It maintains the CFA (African France) in much of west and central Africa. It gifted the statue of liberty to the USA in celebration of its independence, echoing the French aid given to the colonies during the American Revolutionary War.

Hittites

The Hittites were a northern Indo-European people who called themselves “Aryans” (like the Persians)—a term meaning “noble people”.

In 1650 B.C., they were able to gain control of most of Mesopotamia largely because of their advanced warfare, including horse-drawn chariots. Under their rule, life in the Babylonian empire did not flourish artistically or culturally as it did under others’ rule.

In the Old Testament, the Hittites are mentioned more than 50 times, and are described as having descended from Ham's grandson Heth (Gen 10:15). Biblical references to the Hittites include Abraham’s purchase of a burial site from Ephron the Hittite (Gen 23:1-20; 25:7-10) and King David’s murder of Uriah the Hittite to cover up his sin with Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11:3-27).

Because no trace of this ancient civilization could be found for a long time, skeptics claimed it proved that the Bible was an unreliable source. However, in 1906-1907 and 1911-1912 when thousands of cuneiform tablets were discovered in Boghaz-keui a Hittite capital. The finds did much to further the credibility of the Bible as a historical record.

Alien

An alien is a person who is of another family, race, or nation than the people among whom he or she lives.

In the [[Bible]], [[Abraham]] was an alien among the [[Hittites]] in the land of [[Canaan]]. The Hittites showed him kindness, as the Bible time and again indicates natives of a country are expected to treat aliens. In return, aliens were expected to follow the same laws observed by natives of the country.

I like Conservapedia's commandment requiring citation. I am in the information business myself and have felt this is one of Wikipedia's weaknesses. Wikipedia is a good starting point for information, but having citations available is a great aid to taking that next step.

My political views are a mixed bag. Doubtless most conservatives would find me liberal. Not as many liberals would consider me conservative by a long shot, but I like to think of myself as someone who tries to find common ground between the two positions. I prefer dispassionate discussion of issues to back-and-forth rants. I hope to find more of the former here than the latter.

Marijuana and nicotine aren't alcoholic drinks, they're drugs. Also, don't some denominations of Christianity actually drink wine (an alcoholic drink) as part of Holy Communion?[[User:MatteeNeutra|MatteeNeutra]] 13:14, 13 March 2007 (EDT)

No, it is a good point. Alchoholism, like those other drugs, is often trivialized, but can lead people to much greater abuses. That's why the bible warns to stay away from it.--CWilson

The way the sentence was originally crafted made the "drinks" the object, so that anything that came parenthetically after the comma would be assumed to be alcoholic drinks as well. Jesus did not prohibit the drinking of alcohol. Read John 2:1-11, where Jesus makes water into wine at his mother's request. Surely if alcohol were a "demon drink", as the article describes alcoholic beverages at the time of my writing this, Jesus of all people wouldn't be providing it at parties.
