George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (June 25, 1903 - January 21, 1950), an open-minded, leading English writer, essayist and journalist who became increasingly critical of his ideological allies on the left. He grew increasingly conservative while maintaining his good standing among democratic socialists, which allowed him to continue his columns and perhaps to introduce them to conservative insights. "There are nevertheless four aspects of Orwell's later work which are more closely linked to conservative than to left-wing styles of thinking." The tension between the conservative Orwell grew to become and the democratic socialist he still allowed others to view him as, may account for some of his interesting word inventions like "doublespeak".

Unlike most writers, Orwell's greatest works came late in his life. He harshly criticized communism and totalitarianism in 1984, his finest novel. His short story named Animal Farm was an allegorical reference to the Russian Revolution and a frightening tale of how people can change the meaning of words and commandments over time to suit a totalitarian regime. These works were far more influential than his first novel, based on his experiences on the Imperial Police Force in Burma, Burmese Dаys, which explored the evils of coloniаlism.

Biography
Orwell's political views became to move away from the far left when he volunteered to fight the Spanish Fаscist forces to keep them from overturning the socialist government of Spain in the Spаnish Civil War (1936-1939). He enlisted in the POUM (In English, Workers Party for Marxist Unity) Militia, and saw action on the Aragon front, where he fought side by side with Anаrchists and Communists, as well as Republican regulars.

He became disillusioned with the Spanish government's policy of withholding arms from the POUM and the Anarchists, which he saw as an attempt by the Communists to water down the revolutionary nature of the Anti-Fascist resistance, and centralize power in the hands of the Moscow-backed Communist Party. Taking a bullet through his neck but surviving, Orwell was invalided to Barcelona, where he witnessed the Stalinist repression of Trotskyist and Anarchist parties. Orwell and his wife were forced to escape from Spain as fugitives, after the POUM was banned by the increasingly repressive regime.

Despite his persecution, Orwell initially continued to support the Republic upon his return to England, viewing a Communist dominated Spain as better than a Fascist Spain. He recounted his experiences in Spain in the book Homage to Catalonia. He remained a socialist, and was for a time in the late 1930s a member of the Independent Labour Party, although he split from the ILP over its opposition to the Second World Wаr. Orwell served in the Home Guаrd during the war.

Orwell had only ten years left in his life when he returned. During that period he and his wife adopted a baby boy, but Orwell's wife died shortly thereafter.

In those ten years Orwell wrote his famous anti-communist fictional works, demonstrating how much his views had moved to the right from his youth. First he spent three years writing Animаl Farm (1944), and then perhaps five years on the longer novel 1984 (1949). Orwell continued to espouse forms of sociаlism right up to his death, but utilized his position as a regular columnist for the left-labor Tribune paper to strongly criticize the USSR. Such criticism was unusual for a left-winger of the period, but Orwell was so well respected that his position was secure. "I belong to the left and must work with it," he declared in 1945. He died of tuberculosis in 1950.

Inspiration
George Orwell was inspired by Conservapedia for his masterpiece 1984.

Quotes
*"In a time of universal deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act."

*"It cannot be said too often - at any rate, it is not being said nearly often enough - that collectivism is not inherently democratic, but, on the contrary, gives to a tyrannical minority such powers as the Spanish Inquisitors never dreamt of."

*"One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words 'Socialism' and 'Communism' draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, 'Nature Cure' quack, pacifist and feminist in England."

*"If only the sandals and pistachio-colored shirts could be put in a pile and burnt, and every vegetarian, teetotaler and creeping Jesus sent home to Welwyn Garden City to do his yoga exercises quietly. As with the Christian religion, the worst advertisement for Socialism is its adherents."

*"The truth is that to many people calling themselves Socialists, revolution does not mean a movement of the masses with which they hope to associate themselves; it means a set of reforms which 'we,' the clever ones, are going to impose upon 'them,' the Lower Orders."

*"War against a foreign country only happens when the moneyed classes think they are going to profit from it."

*"The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them."

*"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totаlitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I know it."

*"I have no particular love for the idealized 'worker' as he appears in the bourgeois Communist's mind, but when I see an actual flesh-and-blood worker in conflict with his natural enemy, the policeman, I do not have to ask myself which side I am on."

*"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."
Requests, including lawsuits, asking he make his official birth certificate public have gone unanswered.

The US Constitution Article II, Section 1 requires that "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States", thus prohibiting those who were born in another country, even if they are US citizens, from legitimately becoming President.

In total, there are were least 6 lawsuits in the effort to compel President Obama to prove his birthplace and US Citizenship. The lawsuits include those by Democratic former-Assistant Attorney General of Pennsylvania Philip Berg, American Independence Party founder and former-Republican Party Presidential Primary candidate Alan Keyes, and independent author Andy Martin.

Philip Berg explains his lawsuit in this linked video

The Obama campaign released a "Certification of Live Birth" from the State of Hawaii claiming this is proof Obama was born in Hawaii. However, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, an official government agency of the state of Hawaii rejects this document as proof of Hawaiian birth. They require instead a "Certificate of Live Birth" (1st word different). The department states:

"In order to process your application, DHHL utilizes information that is found only on the original Certificate of Live Birth, which is either black or green. This is a more complete record of your birth than the Certification of Live Birth (a computer-generated printout). Submitting the original Certificate of Live Birth will save you time and money since the computer-generated Certification requires additional verification by DHHL."

Bloggers note that the "Certification of Live Birth" records Obama's father's race as "AFRICAN" versus "Negro" and that the document contains the word "LASER" in the lower left hand corner identifying the form type. They claim both words are incompatible with a document generated in 1961. They also note the certification number is blacked out.

SilvioB: Undo revision 756402 by Danq (Talk) Franco used the Church for his purposes, wasn't a real Christian

Fascism today is a word used for attacking proposals to expand the government.

Historically, Fascism is a totalitarian economic and political ideology that arose in early twentieth-century Europe and came to dominate the social and political systems of Italy under Benito Mussolini and Germany under Adolf Hitler. It was influential in Portugal as well, and had followers in most European countries and in Argentina. The last fascism regime, that of Francisco Franco in Spain, came to an end in 1975.

The name "fascism" derives from an ancient Roman symbol, the fasces, a group of birch rods bundled together with an axe. It symbolizes strength in unity; the rods are weak by themselves but strong when bundled together. Historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. has stated, "The Fascists were not conservative in any very meaningful sense. They did not wish to preserve the existing order, or even to turn back the clock to some more stable century. They purposefully planned to transform the existing order into a new and all-absorbing authoritarianism, based upon the energies and frustrations of modern industrialism. The Fascists, in a meaningful sense, were revolutionaries."

Beliefs
Fascists believe that all actions should be done for the good of the state; they reject classical liberalism, which upholds the rights of the individual. It ignores or rejects Christianity. This definition expands to economic policy as well, with government and business working together for this end - this is called "corporatism."

Characteristics of fascism include a belief that the state is more important than the individual; a leaning towards authoritarian government and violence; preference for centralized economic planning; an emphasis on nationalism and national traditions; militarism; information control and censorship; media propagation of the Great Leader which demonizes and trivializes his critics; and a rejection of both free enterprise and Socialism in favor of corporatist economic policies.

Fascist regimes have often concentrated on a "scapegoat" to push their agendas, such as the vehement Nazi attack on the Jews.

The characteristics of fascism also include rampant cronyism and corruption, as well as rigged elections and a general disdain for human rights.

Examples
The prototypical fascist regime was that of Benito Mussolini, who ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943. Other regimes which included corporatist elements are those of Francisco Franco in Spain (1936-1975) and Antonio Salazar in Portugal (1932-1968). German Nazism referred to government mandated corporatist entities as industrial cartels and added an obsession with race. Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek observed in the final stages of World War II, "the rise of fascism and Marxism was not a reaction against the socialist trends of the preceding period but a necessary outcome of those tendencies. Yet it is significant that many of the leaders of these movements, from Mussolini down (and including Laval and Quisling) began as socialists and ended as fascists or Nazis.

Inspiration for the New Deal
:Main article: New Deal

Italian Premier Benito Mussolini was convinced that the New Deal was copying Fascist economic policies. Nazi Minister of Economics Hjalmar Schacht declared that President Franklin Roosevelt had the same economic idea as Hitler and Mussolini; the official Nazi Party organ, Völkischer Beobachter, applauded “Roosevelt’s adoption of National Socialist strains of thought in his economic and social policies.” Hitler expressed admiration for FDR’s approach, saying, “I have sympathy with President Roosevelt because he marches straight toward his objective over Congress, over lobbies, over stubborn bureaucracies.” FDR's Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes conceded that “what we were doing in this country were some of the things that were being done in Russia and even some of the things that were being in Germany. But we were doing them in an orderly way.”

The Italian Fascist Party program, first promulgated in 1919, demanded “Suppression of incorporated joint-stock companies, industrial or financial. Suppression of all speculation by banks and stock exchanges,” and “Control and taxation of private wealth. Confiscation of unproductive income.” The Fascists called this economic system corporativismo (corporativism). As UCLA international relations and political science professor Herbert Steiner observed in 1938, “So substantial are the limitations under which private property and capital are exercised in Italy, that the conception of ‘capitalism’ is avowedly destroyed and replaced by corporativismo.”

National Recovery Administration
:Main article: National Recovery Administration
The centerpiece of the New Deal was the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) of 1933, which was “similar to experiments being carried out by the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini in Italy and by the Nazis in Adolf Hitler's Germany,” according to John A. Garraty, of the Society of American Historians. NIRA established the National Recovery Administration (NRA), “the New Deal’s attempt to bring to America the substance of Mussolini’s corporativism.” As one NRA study concluded, “The Fascist principles are very similar to those which have been evolving in America and so are of particular interest at this time.” They had long advocated a policy of expanding tariffs to keep foreign agricultural products out of the United States,

Roosevelt privately found Mussolini "admirable," writing to his personal friend John Lawrence, "I don't mind telling you in confidence, that I am keeping in fairly close touch with that admirable Italian gentleman." FDR also wrote to U.S. Ambassador to Italy Breckinridge Long about Mussolini, "I am much interested and deeply impressed by what he has accomplished and by his evidenced honest purpose of restoring Italy and seeking to prevent general European trouble."

Hitler likewise expressed "admiration" for Roosevelt's economic policies, and said he was in accord with" Roosevelt's "moral demand," which he identified as the "quintessence of German philosophy of the State," as he wrote in a letter to U.S. Ambassador to Germany William Dodd.

Fascist means to liberal ends
George Soule, editor of the pro-Roosevelt New Republic magazine, wrote in his 1934 book The Coming American Revolution, "We are trying out the economics of Fascism without having suffered all its social or political ravages." In the North American Review in 1934, the progressive writer Roger Shaw described the New Deal as “Fascist means to gain liberal ends.”

World War II Era
Fascism as an ideological theory was comprehensively discredited in the eyes of most Westerners because of the defeat of the Axis powers in World War II.

Modern Times
"Fascist" is today frequently used as a term of abuse both on the left and on the right against one's political opponents. While few people are willing to describe themselves as fascists or endorse the fascist regimes of the past, fascist parties and parties descended from fascist parties (such as the Alleanza Nazionale in Italy) continue to be a minor force in European politics. Fascism seems not to flourish in countries with an Anglo-centric heritage: America, Australia and Canada have never had significant fascist movements, and the British Union of Fascists was never an important force in British politics; though it was significant enough for the government to consider its leader, Sir Oswald Mosley, dangerous enough to intern during the war.

debate

Premise
The surprise selection of Sarah Palin to be John McCain's running mate has energized his base and made the contest much more interesting than if he had chosen a more predictable prospect. As the nation gets to know more about her, though, some are questioning if Palin will be an asset or a liability as the campaigns move into high gear and the debates begin.

Palin is an Asset
This is obviously a transparent attempt to get the women's vote, but that doesn't mean it won't work. And she has some good experience too - both in business, and as govener of a city. That's a definite plus. Unfortunately I've had to make some criticisms in another comment, as she is far from perfect. NewCrusader 15:00, 2 September 2008 (EDT)
:She absolutely is an asset. The Democrats have hoped for a (their) woman President since Lisa Simpson and Hillary Clinton, how embarrassed would it be for them if a Republican is the first woman President? (4 years from now, obviously I'm not wishing for a premature departure by President McCain!). SilvioB 16:07, 2 September 2008 (EDT)
::So the Democrats have wanted a woman to be President since Hillary Clinton, and Palin could be the first woman president and the Democrats would be embarrassed. Besides all of that being debatable on its own, you have yet to explain how it's an asset for the GOP. --Jareddr 16:12, 2 September 2008 (EDT)
:::Because American voters see the opportunity I mentioned, and will turn in mass to vote for her (and McCain in the process). SilvioB 16:43, 2 September 2008 (EDT)
::::I have to feel a little sick at this - even if it works, it's not playing fair. It's manipulating voters - not talking them around with careful reason, shows of competence or popular policy. Just tricking them into voting for a candidate for an irrelivant reason. NewCrusader 19:20, 2 September 2008 (EDT)
:::::You misunderstood me completely. This is not manipulation or a trick. Democrats were weak and undecisive, Republicans instead seized the moment. People will vote en masse for her because in her they see the wind of change. It is called hope for the future and enthusiasm, not manipulation. --SilvioB 19:25, 2 September 2008 (EDT).
::Palin has seized control of the media, and left the Obama camp speechless. They cannot attack her lack of experience without weakening Obama. They cannot attack her being an outsider without ruining that theme for Obama. As for executive ability, her two years as governor give her more executive experience than the other three nominees combined. I expect the GOP will start highlighting her energy expertise. Dems can't even whisper an attack the behavior of her 17 year old daughter (Obama was into cocaine at that age). Palin and McCain control the "reform" and "outsider" issue--the choice of insider Biden meant Obama gave up that theme. (Obama's acceptance speech railed against long-time senators--meaning McCain but also Biden as well.)

Momentum means a lot in politics--Obama had it and squandered it in his faltering campaign against Hillary. Obama does have remarkable oratorical skills, and excellent fund-raising skills, and the GOP is in sad shape. RJJensen 16:56, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

:If the momentum was squandered, wouldn't his poll numbers be going down, as opposed to crossing 50% in the past few polls--the highest either candidate has polled at this cycle? --Jareddr 17:09, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

Palin is a Liability
Palin is a woman and a mother. Already being Governor of a State she is neglecting her family duties. This is shown also in her daughter not knowing Conservative values well enough. HerculeP 14:25, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

It seems clear to me that Palin was chosen to tap into the 18 million voters for Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary. The campaign was trying to tap into voters who were supposedly turned off of the party because Clinton wasn't chosen Vice President. This attempt, which would seem to belittle women by believing they only supported Clinton because she's a female, ignores the VAST political differences between Clinton and Palin. In any case, the attempt seems to have fallen flat on its face. It cuts McCain's "experience" argument by choosing a candidate with virtually NO foreign relations experience. I've been to as many foreign countries as Palin has, and "visiting the troops" is a photo op, not quite the same as serving on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Also, being a mayor of a 5,000 population town may technically be "executive experience", but as Obama points out---the budget of the town, $12 million/year, is roughly the budget of one month on Obama's campaign.
There are already scandels brewing - it looks as if Palin has a few skeletons in the closet:
* Her daughter, 17, unmarried, is now confirmed to be pregnent. This is a big turn-off for the values voters - if she can't keep her own daughter under control, how can she be trusted with the values of a nation? Just to make it worse, the father looks dodgy - some people grabed his myspace page before he took it private. He says he doesn't want children. And swears. A lot.
* Five children, one seriously disabled, and she is going to take on a job as demanding as Vice President, with a significent chance of president in future considering McCain's age. She might talk a lot about family values, but she doesn't seem to care that much for her own. Even more so in light of the above - doesn't her daughter need all the help she can get from an experienced mother right now?
* She brags of fighting the 'bridge to nowhere,' yet records show that she voted for it before changing her mind to vote against it.
It appears Palin is intended to be a safe pick to please the social conservatives - who, to be brutally honest, seem to care about abortion and gay marriage but very little else, and espicially little about the competance of candidates so long as they say the right magic words. That's why he picked someone with immaculate pro-life credentials, even to the point of having a child with Down's. Trying to appeal to that voting block, though, is pointless - McCain already has the social conservative vote, even if they dislike him, because they loathe Obama and the democratic party. Instead he has just picked up someone they are going to look at as a poser, a VP who puts on a big pro-family show in public while caring nothing for her own.
This is part of why I dislike McCain... has the social conservative positions, but he is just dropping with 'politicianness' - that oily residue that comes from trying to win at all costs, playing the games, manipulating the voters, putting his own power above all else. Clinton had it too, perhaps even more so. McCain is just using Palin as a tool, a way to get elected, to push the voters' buttons without any regard to her suitability as a VP. ::First of all, thanks for the poll info Jareddr! I think that Palin is a very odd choice and is going to be a liability. Choosing her tends to negate the "lacks experience" criticism leveled at Obama. That line of criticism was really pretty effective and in fact as a Clinton supporter, it was something that made me shy away from him. Now he looks pretty good in comparison to Palin. Palin is under investigation. Even if she ends up being exonerated or given a slight slap on the wrist, it just doesn't seem like a good thing to have going on while running for VP. Palin is very young looking and makes McCain look really old. He looks like her grandfather! Not a good picture. It ends up putting a double whammy on the age/health issue for him. It makes him look like he could die in office and then what? President Palin? If he was trying to attract women and conservative christians, it seems like he could have done better. The surprise selection of Sarah Palin to be John McCain's running mate has energized his base and made the contest much more interesting than if he had chosen a more predictable prospect. This is obviously a transparent attempt to get the women's vote, but that doesn't mean it won't work. And she has some good experience too - both in business, and as govener of a city. That's a definate plus. Unfortunatly I've had to make some criticisms in another comment, as she is far from perfect. NewCrusader 15:00, 2 September 2008 (EDT)
:She absolutely is an asset. The Democrats have hoped for a (their) woman President since Lisa Simpson and Hillary Clinton, how embarassed would it be for them if a Republican is the first woman President?

Can anyone seriously suggest that being mayor of 5,000 will prepare you to step in as the president of 300 million?

Removing Bible material whose relevance to multiplication is slim
:Multiplication is mentioned in the Bible when God tells Noah to go forth and multiply. (Joke! Really that is a different kind of multiplication.) However, Noah did have to use multiplication when he made the ark, because Genesis 6:15 says:
::And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
:So Noah knew the ark had to be a volume of 300 times 50 times 30 is 450000 cubics3, to fit two of all the animals in the world in it.

Since the first sentence is acknowledged to be a joke and not to refer to the arithmetic operation, it shouldn't be there.

The Ark example isn't very good, for two reasons. First, in the Bible, the product of the three numbers is not mentioned, so this is not an example of a use of multiplication in the Bible. (It would be very relevant in an article about the three dimensions of ordinary space).

Second, the computation as presented is almost certainly wrong, since the Ark was surely shaped shaped like a boat, not like a rectangular box, and therefore its volume would not have been 450,000 cubits3 but some subtantially smaller number, which cannot be calculated exactly from the given data.
This article should have the multiplication table ("times table"). I suppose that the generic child using Conservapedia already knows it, but having it for review purposes can't harm. In addition (pun not intended!), the table makes it easier to understand the whole concept of multiplication. Unfortunately, I'm completely wiki-ignorant, and don't know how to insert tables in articles. SilvioB 20:47, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Should such a private and personal happening as that of her second son be brought to the general public? At least I was dubious on her at first, but reading more and more on her I am convinced that she is the Vice President America and the world need. * The state of Alaska will sue to challenge the recent listing of polar bears as a threatened species, Gov. Sarah Palin announced Wednesday [May 21, 2008].
* She and other Alaska elected officials fear a listing will cripple oil and gas development in prime polar bear habitat off the state's northern and northwestern coasts.
* Palin argued that there is not enough evidence to support a listing. Polar bears are well-managed and their population has dramatically increased over 30 years as a result of conservation, she said.
* Climate models that predict continued loss of sea ice, the main habitat of polar bears, during summers are unreliable, said Palin.
State Legislature Investigation
In August of 2008, the Alaska state legislature began an investigation of Palin and her staff for potential abuse of power in regards to a firing of Commissioner of Public Safety Walter Monegan. Monegan was dismissed from his position in July of 2008. He alleged that Palin fired him because he refused to fire Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, who had been involved in a divorce and child custody battle with Palin's sister. Palin has not been found guilty of any charges yet.
Palin hasn't been found guilty of anything.

Vice Presidential Candidate
On August 29, 2008, Palin was announced to be the Vice Presidential nominee for Republican Senator John McCain. The selection was a surprise, as those in the media were expecting Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty or former Massachusetts's Governor Mitt Romney. Conservapedia was among the first to spread the news. Palin adds youth and executive experience to the ticket. She is the second female Vice Presidential candidate of a major party in U.S. history and the first one on a Republican ticket. The last female Vice Presidential candidate was 24 years ago.

When asked in the past about being McCain's vice presidential pick, she responded on Larry Kudlow of CNBC: "[A]s for that V.P. talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?"

Pope Pius was born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli on March 2, 1876 in Rome, Italy. He was ordained into the priesthood on April 2, 1899.

He served as Pope during World War II. Israeli scholar Pinchas Lapide stated in his book, The Last Three Popes, that the Church under Pius’ pontificate, “was instrumental in saving the lives of 860,000 Jews from certain death at Nazi hands. The figure far exceeds those saved by all other churches and rescue operations combined.”

Upon the death of Pope Pius, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Mier, commented that, “During the ten years of Nazi terror, when our people went through the horrors of martyrdom, the Pope raised his voice to condemn the persecutors and to commiserate with their victims.”

In 1963, a play was produced declaring Pope Pius XII was a Nazi collaborator that did not speak out against the Holocaust. It was discovered in 2007 that the play was actually part of a Soviet Union campaign to discredit Pope Pius XII.
The introduction is actually a blatant misrepresentation of the truth. Real numbers are no more or less "abstract" than imaginary numbers. The author, one must conclude, was trying to allude to the fact that there cannot be an imaginary number of objects, but there cannot be a negative number of objects either. Or perhaps s/he was trying to say that the imaginary numbers cannot be represented on the number line, which is irrelevant, since they can be represented on the complex plane, an equally valid, and more complete, numerical device. Finally, perhaps the author simply meant that the square root of a negative number does not exist, which is wrong. It does exist, in the guise of an imaginary number. While this may seem cyclical, simply because a number is "unusual" does not mean that it is abstract and non-existent.

Illustrations of this fact, and the incorrectness of the introduction, can be seen when solving differential equations which contain a bifurcation parameter, where the method of eigenvalues must be used. There, an complex, "imaginary" solution to one of several equations often contains eigenvalues and thus a corresponding eigenfunction. Therefore, the real-life existent solution to a real-life existent problem depends on an imaginary number. This exemplifies why complex numbers are just as valid as real numbers, and are not merely an "abstract concept," as the introduction erroneously points out. Or to be more precise, ALL of mathematics is an abstract concept, but there exists an isomorphism to the "real world"; an isomorphism that holds just as strongly in the domain of complex numbers as in the subset of complex numbers, the reals.
The bulk of that statement simply isn't correct, which is why I removed it earlier. Historically, it was thought that imaginary numbers didn't "really exist," but for the last 200 years or so it's been understood that they do; I believe Cauchy and Gauss were heavily involved in putting that question to bed. Furthermore, there are indeed physical applications of complex numbers. Anything with a magnitude and phase (think alternating current, any harmonic oscillator, communications signals, etc.) is conveniently represented by complex numbers, and they are absolutely essential in quantum mechanics.
The statement The term "real number" is in contrast to the imaginary numbers. (RSchlafly) is IMO a false dichotomy and shouldn't be put in the article.
I like the sentence: In classical physics, measurements of real world physical objects that can vary smoothly and continuously, like speed or temperature, are treated as real numbers. as it doesn't presuppose the existence of real numbers, but - analogously - you can state: In physics, measurements of real world physical objects that can vary smoothly and continuously - and exist from an angular compound and an absolute value - like current or voltage, are treated as complex numbers. --DiEb 16:30, 16 August 2008 (EDT)

: I don't understand your point. The terms real number and imaginary number are in common use. Are you denying that? Are you saying that they are not in contrast? What do you want? RSchlafly 18:35, 16 August 2008 (EDT)

:: Of course, I don't deny the terms. And I acknowledge that the terms - which can be understood in their historical context - are contrasting. But I don't like the idea to think of the real numbers as more real than the imaginary numbers - especially not because of an etymological reasoning: To quote Kronecker: "Die ganzen Zahlen hat der liebe Gott gemacht, alles andere ist Menschenwerk"--DiEb 16:47, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
:::Huh? Real numbers are those people concretely use. You can express any amount of dollars with real numbers. What would 3 + 2i dollars mean? Or the length of a segment or a curve: it is "real" and expressed in real numbers. Imaginary numbers are just imaginary constructions to help our calculations. They don't refer to "real" concepts people use. Thus, the historical meaning of real vs. imaginary is still valid for normal people - and homeschooled students who use Conservapedia to learn. I absolutely agree with RSchlafly. SilvioB 16:53, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
::::Actually, you can express any amount of currency with rational numbers. That doesn't make the real numbers any less "real," does it? Using your logic, I could say "Pi is a real number. What does pi dollars mean? Nothing. Therefore, the real numbers don't exist." Again, imaginary numbers are not "just imaginary." They exist just as much as any other number, and have several practical applications.--Recorder 17:21, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
::::For currency, you use a subset of the rational numbers, i.e., finite decimal fractions (even less, generally: <math>\mathbb{Z} / 100</math>. To speak of <math>\pi</math> dollars (or even $<math>\sqrt{2}</math>) is as surreal as to speak of 3 + 2i dollars. Real numbers which aren't rational, are just a figment of our imagination, invented to help our calculations, too--DiEb 17:25, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
:::::I realized that and that's why I gave a second example, that of the length of a segment. Do you people really consider real numbers and imaginary numbers equal from the point of view of normal people? Let's not forget who is the target of this project.

In Christianity and many other religions, prayer is the process of directly connecting to God, usually for the purpose of deliberate communication.

Through prayer our thoughts and hopes are heard and understood. Oftentimes, prayer will result in feeling God's presence or feeling like one is touched by God. This feeling of a connection is cited by many theists as proof of God's existence. It is through prayer that man can understand God's will in his life and ask God for the courage and strength to carry his message to the world. Prayer is common throughout the Bible in both the Old Testament and the New.

How not to Pray
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus warned against hypocrisy in prayer:<blockquote>"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."</blockquote>

At the time the religious authorities believed it was necessary to pray at specific times of the day, and would often make sure they were in large crowds of people when those times arose so that they could be seen and heard by all. Jesus did not approve of this.

Jesus also gave instructions on how not to pray:<blockquote>"And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."</blockquote>

Pagan prayers at the time believed that there was power in words and continous repetition and if you said a word often enough, then you could eventually own that object or claim that power for yourself. Jesus condemned this.

A guideline of how one should Pray
In Christianity, Jesus gives a guideline of how one should pray to God with The Lord's Prayer:<blockquote>"Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name, thy kingdom come, they will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thing is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever, Amen."</blockquote>

Private and Public Prayer
There are many examples in the Bible for praying in private and also for praying within a group, and sometimes even for praying in public.

<blockquote>"But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." </blockquote>

Jesus also instructed:<blockquote>"But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."</blockquote>

Even though he was with his disciples, Jesus also went off alone to pray on the Mount of Olives before he was about to be seized and crucified.

There are also many examples in the Bible of group prayer or praying in front of others:
* Solomon prayed publicly in dedicating the temple (1_Kings).
* Daniel prayed alone in his room, but by an open window where he could be seen (Daniel).
* Jesus sometimes prayed with his disciples (Luke).
* The Church prayed for Peter's miraculous release from prison (Acts).
* Jesus prayed in public, such as in Matthew when Jesus prayed for the children brought to him.

Other religions, and even different traditions within Christianity have developed their own practices related to prayer.

Prayer in other religions
In Hinduism, Prayer is an integral part of the daily living. Chanting of mantras is the most important form of prayer in Hinduism. Some devotees meditate chanting different names of the Gods.

The metric system is a system of measurement developed during the French Revolution's anti-religious Cult of Reason and based on permanent natural standards rather than on royal decrees. Joseph Lagrange headed the Revolutionary weights-and-measures committee that developed it and set its initial definitions.

Traditional systems of measurement all used standard lengths of parts of the human body, or standard distances that a human might walk. The metric system, by contrast, initially used the earth itself as the ultimate standard.

In 1878 the United States signed the treaty called the Convention du Mètre. Since then, both the metric system and the United States customary units (miles, inches, pounds, etc.) have had legal status in the US. US Customary units are in fact defined by reference to metric units; that is, legally, an inch is defined to be exactly 25.4 millimeters.

In international scientific usage, the Convention du Mètre is superseded by the conventions of the International System of Units. However, many of the conventions of the metric system survive, including definitions of units that are not, strictly speaking, SI.

Definitions
All measurement systems must start with one basic unit. For the metric system, this unit is the meter. Every other named unit of the metric system had a definition that depended upon it.

Prefixes
All base units of the metric system have prefixes that multiply, or divide, the unit by various factors of ten (or alternatively, a thousand). They are:
| 1012
|}

Other, related systems (see below) use the same prefixes to multiply their units.

Length
The base unit of length, and originally the unit from which all other definitions flowed, is the meter. The original definition was "one ten-millionth the distance from the equator to the north pole." Lagrange's surveyors computed this distance (probably using a variation on Eratosthenes' tropical-shadow experiment) and inscribed it on a metal bar that they kept at the weights-and-measures headquarters building in Sèvres, France.

But this artifact, being made of metal, tended to expand and contract. Centuries later, when the scientific community realized what had happened, the task of re-standardizing all meter sticks to the equator-to-pole-times-10-7 definition was judged too onerous. Therefore the meter was redefined. At first it was defined as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red line in the excitation spectrum of krypton-86. Today it is defined as 1⁄299,792,458th of a light-second.

The meter in all its multiples replaces all other units of measurement, long and short. Long distance is measured in the meter multiplied by a thousand--the kilometer. Short distances are measured in centimeters--or millimeters, or micrometers, or however small one needs to measure them.

Volume
The base unit of volume is derived from the meter: it's the cubic meter [m3]. Traditionally, the liter is used. 1 liter is defined as 10-3 m3 = 1 dm3. Capacity, traditionally measured in liters, refers to the volume occupied by a liquid.

Mass
The base unit of mass is the gram. Originally a gram was the mass of one cubic centimeter (see above), then called a milliliter, of water. The Lagrange committee fashioned an artifact exactly one thousand times as heavy as this--the volume, in short, of one liter of water--and stored this permanently at Sèvres.

Lagrange's committee also proposed a unit of mass called the grave, to be equal to one thousand grams. But the Revolutionary government rejected this name as sounding too much like the German word graf, translated as comte or count in French. Therefore, the artifact at Sèvres would be called a kilogram instead--and that artifact has that name to this day.

Mass never changes. But in addition to the prototype meter changing its length over time, scientists later realized that water has different densities at different temperatures.

Today, the standard kilogram is kept at the International Bureau of Standards headquarters in Sèvres. It remains today the only generally accepted unit of measurement based on an artifact. But the definition of the liter has now changed, and is no longer dependent on the length of the meter. Today, one liter is defined as the volume of one kilogram of water at four degrees Celsius. One milliliter is simply one-thousandth of this, and one milliliter of water at this temperature weighs one gram. But to say that one liter is "one thousand cubic centimeters" is no longer correct, simply because the definition of length has changed, while that of mass has not.

Relation to other systems of measurement
The International System of Units borrows some definitions and concepts from the metric system--most notably the meter and the kilogram--and adds other definitions of other quantities, most notably time, force, amount of substance, plane angle, solid angle, and luminous intensity. The liter is not the unit of volume in that system, however, but liter is accepted for use with the SI.

In addition to the International System (or in French, Systèm International, or SI for short), scientists have invented other systems of measurement that include units of time, force, energy, and electric charge. The most popular are the meter-kilogram-second and centimeter-gram-second systems.

Various governing authorities have established conversion ratios to assist people in converting between the metric system and other, more traditional units of measurement. The definitions of US Customary units in the United States is an example of this.

The Age of Discovery or Age of Exploration was a period from the early 15th century and continuing into the early 17th century, during which European ships traveled around the world to search for new trading routes and partners to feed burgeoning capitalism in Europe. They also were in search for trading goods like gold and silver. In the process, Europeans encountered peoples and mapped lands previously unknown to them. Among the most famous explorers of the period were Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Pedro Álvares Cabral, John Cabot, Yermak, Juan Ponce de León, Bartholomew Diaz, Ferdinand Magellan, Willem Barents, Abel Tasman, Jacques Cartier, Samuel de Champlain, Willem Jansz, Giovanni da Verrazzano and Amerigo Vespucci.

The Age of Exploration was rooted in new technologies and ideas growing out of the Renaissance. These included advances in cartography, navigation, firepower and shipbuilding. Many people wanted to find a route to Asia through the west of Europe. The most important development was the invention of first the carrack and then caravel in Iberia. These vessels evolved from medieval European designs with a fruitful combination of Mediterranean and North Sea innovations and the addition of some Arabic elements. They were the first ships that could leave the relatively passive Mediterranean and sail safely on the open Atlantic.

The prelude to the Age of Exploration was a series of European expeditions crossing Eurasia by land in the late Middle Ages. While the Mongols had threatened Europe with pillage and destruction they also unified much of Eurasia creating trade routes and communication lines stretching from the Middle East to China. A series of Europeans took advantage of these to explore eastwards. These were almost all Italians as the trade between Europe and the Middle East was almost completely controlled by traders from the Italian city states. Their close links to the Levant created great curiosity and commercial interest in what lay further east. The Papacy also launched expeditions in hopes of finding converts, or the fabled Prester John.

The first of these travelers was Giovanni de Plano Carpini who journeyed to Mongolia and back from 1244–1247. The most famous voyage, however, was that of Marco Polo who traveled throughout the Orient from 1271 to 1295. His journey was written up as Travels and the work was read throughout Europe.

These voyages had little immediate effect, however; the Mongol Empire collapsed almost as quickly as it formed and soon the route to the east became far more difficult and dangerous. The Black Death of the fourteenth century also blocked travel and trade. The land route to the East was always to be too long and difficult for profitable trade and it was also controlled by Islamic empires that had long battled the Europeans. The rise of the aggressive and expansionist Ottoman Empire further limited the possibilities for Europeans.

In China, from 1405 to 1433 a large fleet of Zheng He traveled to the Western Ocean (the Chinese name for the Indian Ocean) seven times. But this attempt did not lead China to global expansion.

The “Age of Exploration” consisted of Christians from Europe searching the rest of our globe to spread the faith and seek wealth, particularly between 1450 and 1650.
Finally, something with which I cannot argue... at least not yet.<br />
I was talking with someone about a few of the points made in this essay. Didn't think it related to marriage, just dedication to want to succeed. Oh well. ^.^ NateGoogle's spiders need some work 11:45, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

Gay couples
Hold on. so now gay couples do not help each other? They do not futher each other's goals in life, nag each other, complement each other? of this list of 7 all but two are irrespective of gender. and the two that are based on gender could just as easily be based on TWO DIFFERENT HUMAN outlooks. I know my sister and I complement each other because we are so extremely different - she is into science and math, a liberal, married for 7 years, job as an engineer for a downtown Denver building. I am a nurse with the army, and still waiting for "mr. right". You can't make broad and *unproven* statements about how two people of any gender complement each other.--IcedTea 12:41, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

: I don't know which two you're referring to, and your personal story seems contrived. All the key elements identified apply only to male-female marriages. The invisible hand of marriage does not exist for same-sex marriages.

::Besides, people don't get married to their sisters. I know I wouldn't! -MelanieKoontz 13:36, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
::: Love how trusting you are. You've never heard of two sisters being total opposites? Anyhow, only two of the "hands" directly say that the balance of man and woman is what drives this "hand". My question to you is why two men couldn't be just as productive as a man and a woman, just as focused on bettering their family, just as focused on finding economic goals that set the family in a better position and thereby drive each individual more. Each person in a couple, regardless of gender, helps the other out, encourages them, balances them, gently points out flaws and aids in fixing those flaws, etc. Why is this exclusive to a man and a woman in marriage?--IcedTea 13:55, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
::::Men and women complement each other because they are designed that way by God. Two men or two women could only be a poor imitation of God's design. It would never be as good as the real thing. TJason 18:06, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
:::::Indeed. One simply has to look at the history of homosexual relationships to see that. The pro-homosexual crowd likes to hold up the rare homosexual couple that has lasted decades, but they consistently fail to acknowledge that the average homosexual relationship lasts around 18 months. Additionally, very few "committed" homosexual relationships are monogamous. Jinxmchue 18:23, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

:::I don't even know what that is; I know next to nothing about economics (although I plan to fulfill part of my social sciences requirement with a class in it).
:::: It's interesting you don't know what the "invisible hand" is, and I appreciate your candor. I bet the familiarity with that term and concept is far higher among conservatives than liberals. Indeed, it has been said that a good economics course is more likely to convert liberals to conservatives than any other teaching. That said, it's almost impossible to present or discuss a concept for an invisible hand of marriage without using the term "invisible hand." The lack of Google cites to it was meant to be illustrative rather than a proof of originality.--Aschlafly 23:30, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

Insightful

:::::: "The history of homosexual relationships"? Pray tell, where has this history been recoded for the ages? Is it the source of your uncited claims? Wandering 22:58, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

::::::: There's plenty of research that goes back many decades. The leading psychiatric association used to study it and labeled it as something to be treated and changed, until leftist political pressure took over.--Aschlafly 23:32, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

::::::: Wandering, conservapedia has an excellent article on homosexuality that talks about this. It might be a good place to start if you are actually interesting in an answer to your question. TJason 10:35, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

Originality
*I'm just going to note that it's possible this is not a Conservapedian discovery; others may just have a different name for it. -CSGuy 19:05, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

:: Suggestions welcome. I can't think of any. While we're at it, do you think Adam Smith's invisible hand wasn't original either?--Aschlafly 20:03, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

:::I don't even know what that is; I know next to nothing about economics (although I plan to fulfill part of my social sciences requirement with a class in it). I wasn't saying that the idea is definitely not original, just that a lack of search results for your term doesn't prove that it is. -CSGuy 23:03, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

I tried this, and it actually looks as if it is true that it is an original Conservapedia term. I do get one hit now, and oddly it's not for Conservapedia, but for a website that seems to be blocked by the Conservapedia spam filter.
That website appears to be offline at the moment, but judging from the summary on google, it looks as if it is mocking Conservapedia (explaining the censorship of the term here). Are there moves afoot to get other blogs and websites to publish comments and articles or to get Conservapedia itself on the search engine results? Davidklein 09:51, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

: I assume the Google search engine will pick up our entry in a few days. We're not planning any special effort for it. It will be interesting to see how long that process takes.--Aschlafly 09:54, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

:::That site seems to link directly to this article anyway, so it doesn't matter very much. Etc 12:34, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

:: It might be an interesting project to track the propagation of a concept like this, to see how and how fast it spreads. --Benp 10:20, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
:::I would not open a website blocked by a spam filter. Those often are full of viruses and spyware. At least use an up-to-date antivirus program! Has someone tried opening that website? SilvioB 16:13, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
Respect for authorship
Whether one agrees with this or not, I have to object to people applying direct edits to this piece because it's an essay, not an encyclopedia article. This is the original work of Andrew Schlafly, and is his alone to edit. (For the record, I do not agree with the benefits of a relationship being conditional on the genders involved) --DinsdaleP 14:19, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

: No, Dinsdale, that's not correct. I welcome edits. The very essence of a wiki is group editing, and that applies to essays also.--Aschlafly 14:26, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

<b>Mechanical engineering</b> is the branch of engineering traditionally associated with the design of mechanical systems, covering diverse fields such as materials science, manufacturing systems, hydraulic systems, and automotive systems. In the US, mechanical engineers have generally completed a four year university program, and many have a master's or doctoral degree, particularly those involved in research. A typical undergraduate course of study would include instruction in:
*classical mechanics,
*thermodynamics,
*materials,
*controls systems,
*numerical methods and computer programming,
*fluid mechanics,
*heat transfer,
*and design theory.
Because many systems that were once purely mechanical now have a computerized control component (e.g. anti-lock brake systems) mechanical engineering education overlaps some with other fields such as electrical engineering.

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional hockey with teams across Canada and the United States. Comprised of 30 teams, divided into 2 Conferences and six Divisions each of 5 teams, the NHL teams play for the Championship: the Stanley Cup. The teams play 82 game seasons, and the top 16 teams (3 top teams from each division plus the next 5 teams from the Conference) from the Regular Season advance to a playoff phase where a best of seven series are played between the seeded teams.
<br> Canadian and American players make up the majority of the players in the NHL, however many skilled players have been brought into the league from Europe, making it a premier place for playing hockey. The large number of Canadian players and the large support for the sport of hockey make the NHL a popular draw in Canada, with playoff hockey actually drawing more viewers in Canada than in the United States.
