After school in the 1950s he took over a chain of stores in Katanga province and started to be involved in politics. He founded the CONAKAT party, which ran with the banner of an independent federal Congo. In the general elections in 1960 the CONAKAT party won and gained control of Katanga. In that same year the Congo became an independent republic. But in a quick move Tshombe and the CONAKAT declared Katanga’s secession from the Congo, which turned into the Congo Crisis. Then Tshombe was elected president of Katanga in 1960. Eventually UN forces succeeded in capturing Katanga, which in turn drove Tshombe into exile.

The Domino Theory was a theory that believed that if a country came under the influence of Communists there would follow a “domino effect” that would spread communism to other nearby countries. This theory drove foreign policy in the 20th Century. The theory was first advanced during Harry S. Truman’s presidency. The Domino theory was a phrase that became popular during the administration of U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. According to this theory, once nations such as Vietnam fell to communism, other countries of Asia would fall like a row of standing dominos, one after the other, each knocking the next over.

In the 1950s and the Vietnam War
Secretary of State Dulles explained the phrase in a 1954 press conference, referring to his plans for the treaty negotiations that led to the creation of SEATO:
:"The situation in that area, as we found it, was that it was subject to the so-called 'domino theory.'" "You mean that if one went, another would go?" "We are trying to change it so that would not be the case.... You generally have a whole series of countries that can be picked up one by one. That is the whole theory of the North Atlantic Treaty. When the nations come together, then the so-called 'domino theory' ceases to apply."

During the Vietnam War, the phrase was heard often. Supporters of the war gave the theory as a reason for staying in the war. The actual phrase "domino theory" though, was usually used dismissively by opponents of the war. They thought this theory was an exaggeration. A New York Times columnist mocked it in these words:
:...two of the favorite propositions of its supporters have been particularly hard for opponents to accept. One is the so-called "domino theory"—that if South Vietnam fell to the Communists, other nations in the area would topple like dominoes until the United States was thrown back to Pearl Harbor, or perhaps the West Coast.

In the end, Vietnam did fall to the Communists, but the spread of Communism was largely contained.

In recent years
Before the 2003 Iraq war, neoconservative theorists suggested that a liberated Iraq could be a vanguard of democracy. A democratic Iraq would lead to the fall of authoritarian rulers in neighboring states, and the spread of democracy throughout the Middle East. This has sometimes been called the "democratic domino theory" or the "reverse domino theory."

Real falling dominoes
Since 2001, a commercial organization in the Netherlands has organized an event called Domino Day. Teams of volunteers build enormous displays consisting literally of millions of dominos, then topple them all. The displays consist of huge three-dimensional sculptures that often appear to move or change as the dominoes fall. In 2006, the organization toppled 4,079,381 to set a new record.
Armored cars had already been made and this prompted Major Ernest Swinton to make a tracked fighting vehicle. A committee was formed to oversee the project. The first tank created by this committee was a tank that was nicknamed Little Willie. This tank was tested by the British military in 1915 and was first called a landship. This was later shortened to the word tank. The French also developed a tank that was based off a Holt caterpillar. This tank was first used in 1917. Tanks eventually made trench warfare obsolete and would later become one of the best fighting machines on the planet.

Young was asked by the Allied Reparations Committee to investigate the situation. What Young suggested is that the total amount of reparations should be reduced to around three-quarters. In this way Germany would make annual payments till 1988. All governments but Germany accepted Young’s plan. It was criticized by positions in the right wing. These included Adolf Hitler and Alfred Hugenberg. When unemployment in Germany grew in 1931, payments were suspended and a year later the payments were cancelled.

The Dawes Plan was formed in 1924 when an international committee funded by the United States of America and England tried to save Germany's failing economy. The Dawes Plan, named after American financier Charles G. Dawes, recomended that Germany begin paying 1,000,000,000 gold marks in the first year and increasing to 2,500,000,000 by 1928. It also called for a loan of 800,000,000 marks ($200 million) to Germany. The Dawes Plan ignored the original reparations set by the Treaty of Versailles. By 1929 the Dawes Plan was considered a big success and financial controls over Germany were relaxed. Germany factories were producing again at prewar levels and inflation was no longer a big problem.

----

Dawes Plan was an attempt to collect war reparation debts from defeated post-World War I Germany. Charles G. Dawes chaired the committee that headed up this proposal. Five years later the plan failed and the Young Plan replaced it in 1929. Some of the main points of the Dawes Plan were:

1.The Ruhr area was to be evacuated by Allied occupation troops.

2.Reparation payments would begin at 1 billion marks for the first year and should rise over a period of four years to 2.5 billion marks per year.

3.The German Reich bank would be reorganized under Allied supervision.

4.Foreign loans (primarily from the United States) would be made available to Germany.

5.The sources for the reparation money should include transportation, excise, and custom taxes.

The Salt March peacefully disobeyed the British laws and created much publicity. At that time it was illegal for workers to make their own salt or sell it because of the British salt tax. This allowed Britain to have a complete monopoly. Mohanda did not let women come on the march because he felt that women would not provoke law enforcers like the men would. Foreign Secretary Zimmermann sent a telegram on January 16, 1917, to the German ambassador Johann von Bernstorff in Washington who in turn forwarded it to Mexican ambassador Heinrich von Eckardt. But on January 17, British intelligence intercepted the message. The British were unable to read it because it was sent with a new type of encryption and even Mexican ambassador Heinrich von Eckardt could not read it. The British were only able to read it when Johann von Bernstorff transcribed it into an older code so Heinrich von Eckardt could read it. The telegram was sent to US ambassador Walter Hines Page in Britain who then two days later forwarded it to President Wilson. The US passed this telegram to the press. US papers claimed that the telegram was made up by the British to try to get the US in the war on Britain’s side. But later Zimmerman gave a speech confirming his telegram and put all the speculation to an end.

Sun Yixian 1866–1925 was one of the many Chinese inspired by the revolutions in Europe. He led the Nationalist Party to victory and became the first leader of the new Republic of China. Sun was born near Guangzhou into a farmland owning family. He attended an Anglican boys school in Honolulu. There he came under Western influence and particularly that of Christianity. He later received a diploma from a Hong Kong medical school and began to practice medicine in Hong Kong. After this all his activities were focused on overthrowing the Ch'ing dynasty and establishing a Chinese republic. Sun fled China in 1895 after an abortive revolt. He toured the world a few times to enlist aid from overseas to finance his activities. In 1905 Sun organized a revolutionary league. His political conceptions were based on the three people’s principles: nationalism, democracy, and the people’s livelihood. A revolution erupted in China and Sun was elected president of the new Chinese republic but two months later he resigned.

Max Born (1882-1970) was a German physicist who helped discover quantum mechanics in the 1920s. His major contribution was the statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics. Born was one of two children in a Jewish family to parents Gustav Born and his wife. He was first educated at the König Wilhelm Gymnasium, then at the University of Breslau, then Heidelberg University and then the University of Zurich. He taught theoretical physics at the University of Göttinge during 1921 – 1933. When the Nazi racial laws started taking effect in Germany in 1933 he fled to Britain where he taught principally at the University of Edinburgh from 1936 – 1953. In 1921 he was able to give a very precise definition of the quantity of heat and the most satisfactory mathematical statement of the law of thermodynamics. Then in 1926 he collaborated with one of his student’s Werner Heisenberg to develop a mathematical formulation that would describe Heisenberg’s first laws of the new quantum theory. This was Born’s most well known work. Born died January 5, 1970 in Göttingen, Germany.
