My name is Adeel and for those vaguely familiar with Canadian geography, I live about an hour west of Toronto in Waterloo, Ontario. I'm interested in literature and heavy metal--no doubt a strange combination, but a fascinating one!

I enjoy thinking critically about issues, and as far as politics go, I'd consider myself a Conservative. Oddly enough, I don't find this site reflects my conservative values. If I was to align myself with an American politician, it would be Ron Paul. I'm in favour of small government, a responsible fiscal policy, global trade without nation building, a strong military to defend the people, and of course, the free-market economy (albeit, I do enjoy socialized medicine).

'''Gerard Manley Hopkins''' (1844-1889) was an English poet of the Victorian era. Hailed as a groundbreaking figure in modern literature, Hopkins was born near London to a very large middle-class family. After attending Highgate School for most of his youth, Hopkins entered Oxford in 1863, where he was exposed to both secular and religious teachings. He was particularly interested first in the High Church movement represented at Oxford by Edward Pusey, and then in Roman Catholicism. Influenced by John Henry Newman's conversion to Rome, Hopkins entered the Roman Catholic Church in 1866.

At Oxford in the early 1860s, Hopkins had written many poems, but after his conversion, he burned many of these works, believing that his lifestyle, that is, his writing, was in contradiction to his beliefs. He considered his poems "personal satisfactions" which had nothing to do with his spiritual life. Only after his superiors in the church encouraged him to do so did he continue to write poetry. In 1876, he wrote The Wreck of the Deutschland, a long ode about the wreck of a ship in which five nuns were drowned.

'''William Wordsworth''' was an English poet. He was born in 1770 in Cockermouth, Cumberland, in the English Lake District. His mother died when he was eight, and his father died when he was fourteen. Wordsworth first attended Hawkshead Grammar School in Westmorland, a boarding school that emphasized the teaching of mathematics and classics. He later attended Cambridge University, spending four months in 1790 on a walking tour across Europe. While in France, he became a fervent republican sympathizer.

Wordsworth published his first works of poetry in 1793, including Descriptive Sketches and An Evening Walk. He would later publish, with the help of his friend Samuel Coleridge, the Lyrical Ballads. In the preface to the Lyrical Ballads, Wordsworth declared that the book's object was "to choose incidents and situations from common life and to relate or describe them... in a selection of language really used by men, tracing in them the primary laws of our nature."
