'TWAS THE DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS

'Twas the day before Christmas, and all through the mall,
The last-minute shopping resembled a brawl
The customers combed through the sales with care
In hopes that the ideal gift would be there;

They scowled and grimaced while holding their heads,
And most of them wished they were home in their beds;
As I stood there in line, feeling much like a sap,
I was badly in need of a long winter's nap,

When down by the food court arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the line to see what was the matter.
Away past the storefronts I flew like a flash,
Forgetting for now about shopping and cash.

The sign by the food court said plainly, "NORTH POLE,"
There was fake cotton snow on the floor by the roll,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
By the big plywood sleigh, and eight plastic reindeer?

Why, a fella all clad in a cheap red felt suit,
With fake fur for the trim, and with black vinyl boots.
But for some reason, "Santa" was not in his chair,
He stood and he spoke, as the shoppers all stared.

"You mothers! You fathers! You children and matrons!
Hey, shoppers! Hey, browsers! Assorted store patrons!
There's something old Santa would ask of you all:
It's Christmas eve! Why are you here at the mall?”

"If it's ME that you're seeking, there's something you've missed,
You see," Santa said, "I don't really exist,"
"And these stores, with their merchandise shiny and bright
Aren't where you should be on this holiest night!"

"Now, I'm not saying this to make you feel rotten,
But there's Someone whose birthday you may have forgotten.
But wait--put your cash and your charge cards away,
The gift He would like, you don't pay for THAT way."

And that mall Santa smiled, and kindly he said,
"If you want to find Christmas, ask Jesus instead.
The gift that He gives isn't one you can buy,
He paid the price for you, although it was high."

"But what does HE want? Well, it's hard to forget:
Just love Him and follow the path that He set,
And, rather than fight over deals in a store,
Try to love one another a little bit more."

And laying a finger aside of his nose,
That wise old mall Santa declared the Pole closed.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all! May God bless! And good night!”
