The Air Base was built in 1951 and used a part of the motorway (''Autobahn'') ''Mannheim'' - ''Saarbrücken'' as an airstrip. It is home to the „435th Air Base Wing“ (ABW) and the „86th Airlift Wing“ (AW).

Since 1973, it hosts an annual air show. During the event in 1988, the second second-deadliest air show accident occurred when an aircrafts of the Italian Air Force display team collided during their display. Three pilots died and 67 spectators were killed.
