Obviously neither: that's the general problem with translations - you will almost never match all the connotations of the original. Sometimes it is even difficult to translate ''yes'' and ''no'' from one language into another (in German, you find not only ''ja'' and ''nein'', but a third form ''doch'' to contradict a negative expression...)

That said τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκα literally means ''I have guarded / kept safe the faith''. "Stayed faithful" and "kept the faith" seem to be both valid translations, and both lack the rhythm of the original. Just read it out loud:

τὸν δρόμον τετέλεκα, τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκα

Neither "I have finished [my] course, I have kept the faith" nor "[I] have finished my fight. I have stayed faithful" sounds nearly as pleasing.

As for ''mixing the metaphor'' - what do you mean by this? The KJB and the Greek original use the same pictures of fighting a fight and staying on a (race)-course.
