The Battle of Lake Regillus fought in 496 B.C. was an early battle in the history of the Roman Republic fought between the people of Rome and the Etruscans. It is quite possible, however, that this legendary encounter may have been fought against Latin foes rather than Etruscans. The facts are unclear. What is known is that during this century Rome had frequent conflicts with the Latin, Etruscan, and Sabine states as well as the hill peoples to the northeast.
