Edward G. Rendell

Edward Gene Rendell was elected the 45th Governor of the Commonwealthof Pennsylvaniaas a Democratin 2001.

Prior government experience included Chairman of the Democratic National Committee or DNC in 2000. From 1991-1999 he was Mayorof Pennsylvania's largest city, Philadelphia, a job for which he ran for unsuccessfully in 1987. Prior to this, he was Philadelphia's District Attorney from 1977-1986, when he left to run, unsuccessfully for Governor. As D.A. he was a proponent of Capital Punishment, including one high profile case which he successfully prosecuted, that of convicted cop killer Mumia Abu Jamal ([1]).

Rendell was born on January 5, 1944. He and his wife, Federal Judge Marjorie Rendell have been married since 1971. They have one son, Jesse.
