The Boyajian family has not celebrated Christmas for the past 11 years, since on Christmas Day 1991 the family learned that son John was killed serving in the Gulf War. The family patriarch, George, wants to resume celebrations (since daughter Jeanie is facing a life-threatening illness), but Carol (the mother) adamantly refuses.

While guarding the town's veteran's memorial, George is accosted by a group of teenage punks, who are scared off by "Matthew", a hitchhiker passing through town. George learns that Matthew served in the Gulf War, though in the same regiment as John the two apparently didn't know each other. George invites Matthew to spend Christmas with the family, in an attempt to get the family to celebrate Christmas again, which is successful.

Yet as Matthew shares stories, George wonders about Matthew's true identity, since Matthew shared stories only John would have known. Notably, Matthew shared a story about a serious athletic injury which left a notable scar. Ultimately, it is discovered that Matthew is actually John, making a supernatural visit (by showing the scar) to restore the family's Christmas spirit.
