John Milton (1608-74) was an English poet and writer, whose most famous work, the epic poem Paradise Lost, is considered one of the greatest poems in the English language. The poem is written in blank verse. He was an alumni of Christ College, Cambridge.
He was an opponent of the King and supporter of Oliver Cromwell. In politics he advocated republicanism and a form of Libertarianism. His Areopagitica (1644) strongly condemned the censorship of ideas and has become part of the canon works regarding Freedom of Speech.
