Harold LeClair Ickes was Secretary of the Interior from 1933 to 1946. Ickes campaigned for Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive party in 1912 and for the presidential campaigns of progressive Republicans Charles Evans Hughes (1916) and Hiram Johnson (1920). He was an important figure in the New Deal, administering the Public Works Administration. His son is Harold McEwen Ickes.
