Alan B. Shepard (November 18, 1923-July 21, 1998) was an American astronaut, and held the rank of Rear Admiral. He was born in East Derry, New Hampshire. He was one of the Mercury project astronauts, and on May 5, 1961, he became the first American to journey into space on the Freedom 7 spacecraft. Following a surgery to correct an inner ear disorder he was restored to full flight status in May 1969, and in 1971 he landed on the Moon as Commander of the Apollo 14 mission.
Commander Shepard received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1944, as well as several honorary degrees. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor, two NASA Distinguished Service Medals.
