Antoine Jean Gros
Antoine-Jean Gros (1771 - 1835) was a French Neoclassical Romantic painter. In 1793 Gros went to Italy, where he met Napoleon and was appointed his official battle painter. He followed Napoleon on his campaigns, and his huge paintings such as The Battle of Eylau (Louvre, Paris, 1808) are among the most stirring images of the Napoleonic era. [1]
The painting Napoleon Bonaparte Visiting the Plague Victims of Jaffa launched his career when he debuted at the Salon in 1804. Other important works are: Bonaparte at the Bridge of Arcole, 1796, (Château de Versailles), The Battle of Nazareth, 1802, (now in the Musée de Nantes), The Battle of Aboukir, 1806, (Versailles), Portraits of Francis I, and Charles V, 1812, (Louvre), and Bonaparte at the Battle of Pyramids in 1798 (Bonaparte à la bataille des Pyramides), 1810, (Château de Versailles).
