Francois Viete

Francois Viete (1540-1603) was a French mathematician who introduced convenient notations for algebraic formulas, like "x" and "y" in mathematical equations. For example:
Viete inspired fellow French mathematician Rene Descartes, who then developed a coordinate system for graphing such equations.
