287(g)

Section287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality act allows the Department of Homeland Security and state and local governments to enter assistance compacts in order to find, arrest, and deport illegal immigrants. Both sides must agree on the terms of the program before it is implemented. State and local law officers are trained in 287(g) under the DHS to teach lessons learned and best practices. With this they get significantly more authority for enforcing immigration law than they do under the existing laws.
287(g) got its' start in the 1996 amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act passed by congress. As of now it is a volunteer program, though some would now like to make it mandatory.
