Charles-François Gounod (Paris, France, 1818 - Saint-Coud, France, 1893) was a French composer, best known for his Ave Maria as well as his operas Faust (based on the play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) and Roméo et Juliette (based on the William Shakespeare play). In 1839, Gounod won the Prix de Rome for his cantata Ferdinand.
