The '.308 Winchester' and the similar (nearly identical) '7.62x51mm NATO' rifle round is an extremely popular target shooting, sniper, military, and hunting round. It was the primary round used by most military, in weapons such as the M14, HK G3, CETME and FN-FAL, until is was replaced by the lighter 5.56x45mm NATO. It is still used for many military purposes.[1]
