In Greek mythology, Actaeon was the son of Aristaeus and Autonoe, and the grandson of Cadmus, the first king of Thebes.

He was bred to be a hunter by Chiron. When he was hunting in the valley of Gargaphia, he accidentally entered a grotto where Artemis was bathing with her nymphs. The enraged goddess transformed Actaeon into a stag and he was chased and devoured by his own hunting dogs.
