Alternate history is a broad genre of literature where the outcome of a historical event happens differently, and the subsequent events thereafter.

A popular topic of alternate history is the scenario in which the the South won the American Civil War. Filmmaker Kevin Willmott, a professor at the University of Kansas, made a film called CSA: Confederate States of America dealing with this subject. The author widely considered to be the best in the genre is Harry Turtledove.
