Amedeo Avogadro(1776-1856) was an Italian chemist and devout Christian who studied the volume of gases. He discovered what is now known as Avogadro's Principle or Avogadro's Law. Over 50 years later the significance of his discovery was appreciated, and the concept of a mole was discovered. The number of molecules in a mole is called Avogadro's number.
