The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) Американски университет в България is a fully accredited liberal arts university located in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.

History

The AUBG was created in 1991 in the wake of the Soviet collapse. On September 30 of the same year, classes started for the first fully-accredited western college in the former Soviet Bloc nation. The AUBG's first year had 208 students and 16 full-time faculty members in attendance. The AUBG was initially accredited though the University of Maine. In 2001, it gained independent accreditation through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).[1]
