The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu kingdom. The war began when the British invaded Zulu territory. At Isandlwana, Zulu warriors, armed only with spears, shields and similar weapons, defeated the British Army, which was armed with rifles and cannons. The Zulus won smaller victories at Intombe and Hlobane. Despite these victories the British eventually won the war by using Gatling Guns and modern field guns which caused massive casualties to the Zulus. The British were shocked by the bravery and strength of the Zulu warriors.
