Asher Brown Durand

Asher Brown Durand (1796 – 1886) was an American painter of The Hudson River School (a mid-19th century American art movement embodied by a group of New York City-based landscape painters). Thomas Cole is acknowledged as the founder of this movement and Cole's close friend, Asher Durand, was also a prominent figure in the school.

Durand believed that nature was an ineffable manifestation of God. His 1849 painting Kindred Spirits shows fellow the Hudson River School artist Thomas Cole and poet William Cullen Bryant in a Catskills landscape.
