Avoirdupois is the set of units of weight based on a 16-ounce pound and a 16-dram ounce. The term comes from an Anglo-French phrase for "goods of weight." This system is used by the Postal Service and grocery stores and for weighing most general merchandise.

The term avoirdupois has another common meaning: having heavy personal weight, or being fat.
