Awe is, in the words of an unknown smart person, "involuntary respect" - it is the condition of feeling overwhelmed by or filled with respect, whether one intends to be or not.

We feel awe when we encounter beauty, witness acts of great heroism or self-sacrifice, or in religious contemplation.
