Baden-Wuerttemberg (Baden-Württemberg) is one of the sixteen federal states (Bundesländer) of Germany. It is situated in the south-west of the federal republic and shares borders - mostly following the river Rhine (Rhein) - with Switzerland and France. The neighboring federal states are Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz) to the north, Hesse (Hessen) to the north-east and Bavaria (Bayern) to the east.

The capital of Baden-Wuerttemberg is Stuttgart.

Baden-Wuerttemberg was formed by the fusion of the former Bundesländer Wuerttemberg-Baden (Württemberg-Baden), Wuerttemberg-Hohenzollern (Württemberg-Hohenzollern) and Baden, a singular process in the history of the federal republic of Germany, as a recent attempt to fuse the Bundesländer of Berlin and Brandenburg failed.

In 2011, Baden-Wuerttemberg became the first Bundesland to be governed by a state premier from the Green Party, Winfried Kretschmann.[1]

Baden-Wuerttemberg is currently ruled by left-center SPD and environmental Alliance '90/The Greens.
