Balthasar Denner's portrait of George Frideric Handel (1733)

The baroque period in classical music saw a greater emphasis on detail and ornamentation, and a growing subject matter in addition to the religious celebrations of the renaissance period.

Baroque music tends to have a strict metre and absence of modulation.

Prominent composers of this era include: Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, Tomaso Albinoni, Francesca Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Henry Purcell, Barbara Strozzi, Arcangelo Corelli, Johann Pachelbel and Georg Phillip Telemann.
