Bastille Day (July 14, 1789), also known as French Independence day marked the beginning of the French Revolution. It was when French peasants stormed the Bastille prison and freed all seven inmates. Its most famous inhabitant, the author and aristocrat, the Marquis de Sade had been removed from the Bastille a few days previously and sent to a lunatic asylum.

Bastille Day is still celebrated in France today on the 14th of July.
