The Battle of Cable Street was a riot that took place in Cable Street, in London's East End on Sunday October 4, 1936, and which effectively ended mainstream British fascism. Shouting the Spanish Civil War slogan "No pasaran!" ("They shall not pass!") more than 300,000 people - comprising Jews, Irish Catholic dock workers and Labour Party supporters - fought running battles with the Police and Sir Oswald Moseley's "Blackshirts". Their victory over racism and anti-Semitism encapsulated the British fight against fascism that was then "stomping across Europe."[1]
