The Battle of Cape Ecnomus was fought in 256 B.C. as a part of the Punic Wars between Carthage and Rome. It was a huge naval battle with 330 ships under Roman command against 350 ships under the command of Carthage. The Carthaginians wanted to prevent Rome and their force of 150,000 men from invading Africa. As with the battle of Mylae the new Roman invention of the corvus brought the Romans victory whereas previously they could not compete with the Carthaginians. 30 Carthaginian ships were sunk and 64 captured, whereas the Romans only lost 24 ships. The Romans were free to land in Africa.
