The Battle of Pylos in 425 B.C. was part of the Second Peloponnesian War between the Greek city states of Athens and Sparta. The Athenian general Demosthenes, riding the wave of his victory in the Battle of Olpae, established a fortified base at Pylos. The Spartans attacked by land, but were repulsed while Demosthenes was able to capture an entire Spartan fleet leaving a contingent of Spartan soldiers isolated on the island of Sphacteria.
