The Beatitudes are a series of blessings from Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 5:3-12 and the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Luke 6:20-22.
There are four Beatitudes found in both Matthew and Luke, although the wording is slightly different in each Gospel. There are four additional Beatitudes in Matthew (vv. 10-12 are generally considered as a single Beatitude due to the common topic of persecution for Christ's sake).
According to Luke:
- Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. (Matthew has "poor in spirit".)
- Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. (Matthew: "hunger and thirst after righteousness".)
- Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
- Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
According to Matthew:
- Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
- Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
- Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
- Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
- Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
- Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.
- Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
