Bleeding Kansas is the name given to a "civil war" that took place in Kansas in the early 1850s over the issue of slavery. It led to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which introduced the idea of popular sovereignty. This did not immediately lead to peace, but begat further violence such as raids in Lawrence and by John Brown.
