Britain's Got Talent
Britain's Got Talent is a television show broadcast on the ITV network in the United Kingdom. The show showcases amateur talent by encouraging people to audition for the show. It is part of the "Got Talent" series created by Simon Cowell. The show debuted in 2007, with each season culminating in a semi-final and final round.
Famous contestants
In 2007, opera singer Paul Potts won the final round. Potts has since gone on to additional fame as a concert performer and his debut album, One Chance hit the #1 spot on the U.K. album charts.
The 2008 season was won by 14 year old dancer George Sampson.
During the debut show of the 2009 season on April 11, the performance of singer Susan Boyle became a sensation around the world, including the clip of her performance widely viewed over YouTube and shown on evening TV newscasts. Boyle's vocal talent caught the judges and audience off guard, who were initially skeptical because of her plain appearance and dress. Initially met with snickers when she appeared on stage, the audience gave her a standing ovation soon after she began performing her rendition of "I Dream a Dream" from Les Miserables. Her backstory contributed some to her fame, as a 47-year-old woman from Scotland whose mother had recently passed away, and who had, in her words, wanted to be a professional singer but had never been given a chance. Susan Boyle is a devout Roman Catholic and a church volunteer. She also received a standing ovation the next morning when she appeared in church on Easter Sunday.
The 2009 season winner was a dance group called Diversity, who beat Susan Boyle in the final round.
