The Brooklyn Nets are a professional basketball team based in Brooklyn, New York.

One of the charter members of the American Basketball Association in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans, they made the playoffs in the inaugural season, but due to a double booking of their home court and inability to find a suitable replacement, they forfeited their playoff game. The following year they permanently relocated to an arena on Long Island and adopted the name New York Nets (to rhyme with the baseball New York Mets and the football New York Jets, at the time both were Long Island based). The team won two ABA titles -- including the last one -- led by Julius "Dr. J" Erving.

Upon being one of four teams absorbed by the NBA in a merger of the leagues, unlike the other three franchises (who only paid an entrance fee of $3.2M) the Nets were required to pay an additional $4.8M fee to the New York Knicks (the existing NBA franchise in the area) and were required to sell Erving's contract as a result.

The team moved (back) to New Jersey in 1977 as the New Jersey Nets, before once again returning to Long Island as the Brooklyn Nets.

The Nets play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.

They won the Division Title in 2002 and 2003.
