A rose bud

A bud is a plant organ that is the location of latent leaf, flower, or stem growth.

The activation of these buds varies from species to species. Some buds remain latent for years, only being activated if hormones from the dominant stem cease, as a result of damage, disease, or pruning. Buds can be lateral or terminal - lateral being on the side of existing stems, and terminal being at the tip. Lateral buds that develop promote bushiness, whereas terminal buds are the future sites of increased size of the plant.
