Burwash (Derivation: OE, “ploughed field by the fort”) is a village in East Sussex, England, about 21 km (13m) north-west of Hastings. Whilst a centre of steel working in the 16th and 17th centuries, its only claim to fame these days is that it was the local village of Rudyard Kipling who lived in a house called “Bateman’s” - built originally for a local ironmaster - for the last 34 years of his life.
