A CAPTCHA by Solve Media

A CAPTCHA (acronym for Completely Automated Public Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart[1]) is a type of test on the internet that determines whether the current user is a human or an internet bot. CAPTCHAs are used to prevent bots from performing certain tasks, such as creating user accounts.

Types

Image to text

This type of CAPTCHA is an image that contains hard-to-read text that is supposed to be only readable by a human. To pass the test, the human must type the text that they see in the image, and the website will determine if it is correct.

Use

CAPTCHAs are used in wikis, such as Conservapedia and Wikipedia, to prevent automated account creation and automated external link addition.
