Camille Corot

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796 – 1875) was a French Realist painter. Corot was member of the Barbizon School of France. He is considered the first great French landscape painter. Edgar Degas proclaimed Corot an even greater figure painter than a landscapist. [1] Corot's students included Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, and Berthe Morisot.

Corot followed the advise of his teacher Achille-Etna Michallon "to reproduce as scrupulously as possible what I saw in front of me". His landscapes anticipated those of the Impressionists and the en plein air technique.

Through he represented nature realistically, he did not idealize the peasant or the labors of agriculture in the manner of Millet and Gustave Courbet, and was uninvolved in ideological controversy. [2]

Corot is the best-known 19th century French landscape painter before Claude Monet and perhaps the most influential of all 19th century French landscape painters. [3] He and painters in the Barbizon School established a French landscape tradition.
