A champion is one that wins first place or first prize in a competition, or especially one who repeatedly wins first place or first prize in the same competition for many runnings of it.

A champion might also be one chosen to:

  1. Defend another in a trial by combat.
  2. Represent one of two sides in an inconclusive battle situation, in single combat.
  3. Lead a group in rebellion.
God will raise me up a champion Sir Walter Scott

Finally, a champion can be any person who make an extraordinary effort, especially if that effort makes a difference between the success or failure of an endeavor by any group of which he is a part, or even the life or death of another person.
