Charles Gleyre (Chevilly 1808 - Paris 1874) was a Swiss painter.
In 1862 Renoir began studying art under Charles Gleyre in Paris. Gleyre also taught Alfred Sisley, James Whistler, Frédéric Bazille and Claude Monet. During his early adult years he traveled six years wanderings though Greece, Egypt, Nubia and Syria. In Cairo, Gleyre was attacked with ophthalmia, and later in Lebanon he was struck down by fever. This shattered health forced him to return home.
