Charles the Fat (839 - 888) was a great-grandson of Charlemagne. When he became King of West Frankia in 884 - after already being King of Alemannia (since 876), King of Italy (since 879) and western Emperor (as Charles III since 881), he had unified the whole Carolingian empire - though only for a very short time. The empire was never restored afterwards.[1]
