Chiapas is a state in southern Mexico; until 1821 it was part of Guatemala. Its capital city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The name derives from that of the Chiapa people.
In recent years Chiapas has seen a rise in conflicts, sometimes violent, between adherents various Christian denominations.
