Christopher Scott "Chris" Kyle (April 8, 1974 – February 2, 2013) was a United States Navy SEAL having the most recorded kills—160—by a sniper in American history, with the actual number estimated to be even more, up to 255. His best-selling autobiography, American Sniper, was produced by Clint Eastwood as a wildly popular film that was later snubbed by liberal Hollywood at the 2015 Academy Awards.[1] Kyle was born, reared, and resided in Texas, which honored him by officially declaring February 2, 2015, as "Chris Kyle Day."[2]
He served four times for the United States in the Iraq War and claimed to have been awarded two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars with Valor.[3] The Navy is currently investigating claims about Kyle's service record, which reveals that he in fact earned only one Silver Star and three Bronze Stars.[4]
On February 2, 2013, Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were murdered by ex-Marine Eddie Ray Routh at a shooting range near Chalk Mountain, Texas. Routh was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
