Joseph Christopher Maggio, known as Chris Maggio (born June 18, 1964),[1][2] is the former president of his alma mater, Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He filled the position from 2017 until his retirement in the summer of 2021.[3]

The choice of a national presidential search, Maggio assumed his duties on May 4, 2017, four months before his formal investitute on September 15, He succeeded the two-year presidrnt James B. Henderson, who became chancellor of the University of Louisiana System, based in Baton Rouge.. When selected as president, he had been a university vice president from 2013 to 2015. He obtained bachelor's and master's degrees from NSU and a doctorate in developmental education from the historically black (though he is white) Grambling State University in Grambling in Lincoln Parish in north Louisiana. He came to NSU in 1988 as a track and field coach and moved up the administrative ladder over the years. In 1999, he was appointed director of alumni affairs, and in 2003, director of alumni development in 2003. In 2005, he became the executive director of the NSU Foundation. In 2007, he was named dean of students and assistant provost.[4]

In Maggio's time as president, NSU reported an unprecedented increase in grants and private gifts for the first half of 2017 and a 7.7 percent increase in enrollment fin the fall semester of 2017. The current enrollment exceeds ten thousand, the largest in the university’s history.[4]

A Roman Catholic, Maggio is of Italian ancestry. He and his wife, the former Jennifer Zeagler, reside in the president's home on campus. They have three children, Melanie, Scott, and Emily Maggio.[4]
