Cleveland is a former administrative and ceremonial county in north-east England, formed in 1974 and replaced in the late 1990s by the districts of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees, Middlesbrough and Redcasr & Cleveland. The first two of these have reverted to County Durham and the latter two to north Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes, but administratively are Unitary Authorities. Cleveland still exists for the purposes of policing and fire and civil defence. The area is highly industrial, with a number of chemical and steel works.
