Composting in Peru

Composting is means of organic waste disposal. Typically, organic and biodegradable materials such as vegetable scraps, manure (chicken and cow are best), egg shells, and coffee grounds. Some forms of composting use heat to facilitate the decomposition process. Worms can also be used for this purpose.

Composting using heat is known as "active" composting. "Passive" composting is the opposite, in which there is little human intervention in the process. Passive composting is the type used by most individual people.

Composting can be used as an alternative to landfills, and can also be a corollary to recycling.
