Images, which consist of photographs, paintings, and drawings, are uploaded to Conservapedia daily. They fall into two main categories: those that are copyrighted, or those which are not. Restrictions have to apply to all of them,

Copyrighted Images

All images created after January 1923 are considered copyrighted by the creator/owner of the image unless their status has changed by owner action. To use copyrighted images in Conservapedia, you must do the following:

  • On the image page, your first edit will be to identify the name of the image (such as from a painting), or the subject of it (as in a photograph); the place where the image was created; the date of the image creation, and the name of the person who created it.
  • Below this edit, you will place a license tag from the Fair use article. You will write the source where the image came from, whether from a book or website; and you will write the reason for "fair use" of the image.

To be considered "fair use", you have to have a logical justification for uploading the image to Conservapedia. If the picture is of a German shepherd dog, for example, the image should go in that article only and nowhere else.

Fair use applies generally to news stories or criticism. In most cases it is best to ask permission from the copyright owner; if they say no, then don't upload it.

Non-copyrighted Images

These images are not copyrighted for the following reasons:

  • They were created prior to January 1923, and are ineligible for copyright under U.S. law;
  • They were willfully released into the public domain by the creator/owner of the image;
  • The copyright the owners once held has been allowed to lapse, releasing the image into the public domain;
  • They are the product of the U.S. Government.

To upload and use these images in the articles, you still must identify the name of the image or the subject of it, the place where the image was created, the date of the image creation, and the name of the person who created it. Just because they are public domain does not absolve you of this responsibility. Use the appropriate license tag below.

If in doubt about the status of an image, assume it is copyrighted until proved otherwise.

Warning Tags

These tags are "stop action"; i.e. an unauthorized image or written material uploaded to Conservapedia, which must have a proper license tag placed or removal will happen.

This tag is a tame warning to prevent edit wars; the idea is to stop them before they get worse, and get everyone to think about doing a better job.
